CAS Researchers Awarded the 2009 HLHL Foundation Prize

Nov 18, 2009

The 2009 Ho Leung Ho Lee (HLHL) Foundation Award Ceremony & the 15th Anniversary of the Establishment of the HLHL Foundation was held on Nov. 10 at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, Beijing. 30 scientists won the HLHL Prize for S&T Progress, and 15 received HLHL Prize for S&T Innovation.

Prof. ZHU Zuoyan with the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) was awarded the 2009 Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress of the HLHL Foundation in recognition of his outstanding achievements in science and technology and his contribution to scientific innovation.

The research fellow of Purple Mountain Observatory Chinese Academy of Sciences (PMO), WU Lianda, was awarded the science and technology progress of Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation .

Dr. XIA Jiawen from Institute of Modern Physics, CAS(IMP), was honored with the HLHL Prize for S&T Progress.

Prof. Zhu is a pioneer in the development of transgenic fish and the successful application of nuclear transfer techniques to fish. Led by late Prof. Tung TC, a famous experimental embryologist in China, Zhu and his colleagues transferred blastula nuclei of common carp into the enucleated eggs of crucian carp and generated the first ever cloned vertebrate developed from a ‘hybrid egg’, i.e., an egg whose cytoplasm and nucleus were from different species.

In early 1980s, Zhu successfully produced world's first batch of fast-growing transgenic fish, which subsequently led to a new era of fish transgenic breeding.

The achievements have been included in the esteemed textbook The Timetables of Science: A Chronology of the Most Important People and Events in the History of Science (Edited by A. Hellemans & B. Bunch, Publisher: Simon & Schuster).

Led by Prof. Zhu, researchers from the Research Group of Fish Gene-Engineering elucidated the molecular behavior and mechanism of transgene’s integration; generated a model of site-directed integration of transgene; built up an artificial lake system to study the eco-safety of transgenic fish; and optimized the farming parameters of transgenic fish.

They revealed the molecular mechanism that caused the developmental arrest of NT embryos; produced over 400 insertion mutants of zebrafish gene; proved the angiogenesis process of zebrafish gene regulated by max-1 and Ephrin B3; revealed the necessity of exdpf in the proliferation and differentiation of acinar cells of the pancreatic exocrine; established a research model of Parkinson’s disease.

Prof. Zhu was elected academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1997 and academician of the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in 1998.

Prof. Wu is the 4th awardees of PMO, after XIONG Darun (2003), ZHANG Jiaxiang (2005) and LU Tan (2008) , Prof. Wu has been engaged in celestial mechanics researcher and satellite dynamics theory for a long time. He has made a great contributions on space object observation and research.

Dr. XIA is the third HLHL Prize laureate at IMP after the former two ones, Academicians WEI Baowen and ZHAN Wenlong.

The Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation (HLHL), set up in Hong Kong in 1994, give annual awards to Chinese scientists. It is the most influential non-governmental prize in science and technology in China.

Chinese State Councilor Ms. LIU Yandong, along with Mr. WAN Gang, vice-chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and the foundation donators gave annual awards to the winners.
